Wendy Sloan

Wendy Joan Sloan, 86, of Charlevoix, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 3, 2026, at Charlevoix Hospital with her beloved son and daughter-in-law at her side. She was born on July 15, 1940, in Charlevoix, the daughter of Douglas G. and Thelma (Hudkins) Knudsen.

Wendy graduated from East Jordan High School in 1958. On November 3, 1962, she married the love of her life, Emory Sloan in Ironton, MI. Emory was enlisted in the Coast Guard which brought the pair and their sons to many parts of the world including the Philippians, Vietnam, the Bering Sea, Alaska, California, Duluth, MN and many other wonderful places too. Wendy worked as an office assistant for the Coast Guard for several years and spent many more employed with the Social Security Administration. Upon Emory’s retirement, they moved back home to Charlevoix permanently.

Wendy was a dedicated wife and mother of two boys, always making sure they had everything they needed. She was a long-time member of the Greensky Hill Indian United Methodist Church in Charlevoix, as well as the VFW, the American Legion and the USCG Women’s Auxiliary. She marched in the Venetian Parade for many years showing her support for the military.

She loved spending time with her grandchildren more than anything else in the world and always made it a point to throw special birthday parties each year. She enjoyed taking long walks, reading, doing crosswords, and knitting. She knit baby blankets and baby hats that she donated to area hospitals for newborns. Wendy was also a mentor for the Junior Golf Program at the Municipal Golf Course for many years, and belonged to a women's golf and bowling leagues in Charlevoix.

Wendy is survived by her son, James (Renee) Sloan of Dorr, MI; her sister, Marie Yettaw of East Jordan; and nine grandchildren, Dylan, Aiden, Kellan, Kenley, Henry, Austin (Rylee), Logan (Isabelle), Connor, and Doug; mothers of his son Doug’s children Amy Vought and Kerry Turner-Sloan; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Emory Sloan; her son, Douglas Sloan; her brother, Peter Knudsen; and her sister, Glenda Fae Ferguson.

A funeral service will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14, 2026, at the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with Pastor Sarah Schaeffer officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 12:00.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Major Douglas Sloan Scholarship Fund, c/o Charlevoix Public Schools, 5200 Marion Center Rd, Charlevoix, MI 49720.
