Steven Dean

Steven Brooke Dean, 70 of Charlevoix, Michigan passed away on Friday, December 19, 2025, at his home amongst his loving family.

Steven was born on December 26th, 1954, in Oakland, California, the middle child of five siblings. He graduated from Menomonie High School in Wisconsin in 1973, where he met his future wife, Janet. Steven married Janet Alseth on May 14th, 1977. They would spend the next 48 years moving across the United States together, while raising their two children Nathan and Jennifer. He joined the United States Coast Guard in 1978 in the engineering field. He served a variety of ships and stations from the Atlantic Ocean to the Bering Sea and all Great Lakes. He retired as a Machinery Technician Chief Petty Officer in 1998 aboard the USCG Acacia of Charlevoix, Michigan.

His civilian life included working at Continental Structural Plastics in Petoskey and Wojan’s Windows in Charlevoix. His hobbies included weekly sailing aboard Cygnus, for 20 years at the Charlevoix Yacht Club, with his dear friend Dr Jim Stewart. He enjoyed using his engineering expertise to build model RC planes and helped grow the Charlevoix Area RC Buffs plane club. He has participated in the Iceman Cometh winter bike race numerous times in Northern Michigan. He spent the last few years enjoying traveling to various lighthouses and events with his wife Janet. He adored spending time with his two granddaughters Ariel and Mira.

He is survived by his wife Janet Dean, son Nathan Dean, and spouse Kate Flannery, daughter Jennifer Bennett and spouse Mark Bennett. Additionally, his grandchildren Mira, Ariel, and her spouse Gage. He is also survived by his one brother Thomas Dean and sisters Linda Blackmarr, Laura Dekas and Sam Dean. He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and loving extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents Tom and Lila Dean.

A visitation will be held on January 17th from 1-5pm at the Mortensen Funeral Homes in Charlevoix, Michigan. 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Charlevoix Buffs RC Club via check to 512 West Hurlbut, Charlevoix Michigan 49720. A funeral service will be held May 14th, 2026, at Christ Lutheran Church in Menomonie, Wisconsin with burial at Halvorson Cemetery.
