Stephen J. Hallberg

Stephen J. Hallberg of Mancelona, MI formerly of Midland, passed away on November 20, 2022.  He was born on October 27, 1951, to Barbara and Gerald Hallberg Sr. in Midland.  He was a graduate of Midland High School in 1970 and then attended Ferris State.  Steve was always an adventurer, and he moved to Colorado where he made his home for over 35 years.

Steve had many interests, including getting his pilot’s license and buying a plane, and a passion for unique cars – his favorite being a 1940 Packard that he had fun taking to car shows around Northern Michigan.  He was a fan of music and knowledgeable on all genres, but especially loved country.

Upon his retirement, Steve purchased the Green River Trout Farm near Mancelona, where he had always loved to fish and take in the peace of nature.

Steve was a proud father to Lucas Hallberg of Mancelona, and his granddaughter, Zoe.  He will also be remembered fondly as a father figure by Matt Schneider of Colorado.

He is survived by his brothers Gerald Jr. (Beverly) of Saginaw, Ed (Holly) of Midland, sister Anne Nicholson of Kalamazoo, four nephews Thad, Eric, and Jason Hallberg, and Chris Nicholson, and their families.

He will be missed by two special friends, Douglas Cron of Elk Rapids and G. Casey Wiggins of Torch Lake.  They met at the Methodist Epworth Preschool in Midland and maintained a close friendship for 66 years.  They attended many MHS class reunions together where they enjoyed reconnecting with old friends, and also meeting their old gang for a beer and burger at the Bully when in Midland.

Steve will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but memories will live on of the many good times spent together.  A celebration of Steve’s life will be held at a later date.

Arrangements have been handled by the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
