Sonya Maria Fortin, 57 of Elk Rapids, passed away December 2, 2020 as the result of an automobile accident. She was born November 21, 1963 in Traverse City the daughter of David and Joan (Peterson) Fortin.
Sonya graduated from Traverse City High School in 1982 and from Ferris State University with her Bachelor’s degree in Education. She substitute taught for the Traverse City public school system, she worked in home health care and was also a cosmetologist. Sonya enjoyed painting and doing art work, especially making jewelry. She was fun loving and outgoing with lots of friends. Sonya was a competitive figure skater growing up, competing all over Michigan and Canada. She loved spending time at the beach, going boating, kayaking and being outside. She was a member of the Elk Rapids AmVets Post 114.
Left to cherish her memory are her parents David and Joan Fortin of Traverse City and Bradenton, FL, her sister Michelle (Kevin Erickson) Casselman of Maple City, and nieces Crystal (Jason) North, Tammy (Charlie) Jones, and April (Edward) Echavarri all of Grand Traverse County Area, aunt Ruth Bendak and uncle Eugene Peterson both of Long Island, NY, her cousin Marcia Fortin of Muskegon and many other loving cousins. Sonya is mourned by her longtime friend of 15 years Dennis VanFleteren of Elk Rapids, She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Ruth and John Peterson of Long Island, NY and paternal grandparent Oliver and Madelyn Fortin of Traverse City, MI.
A celebration of life will be held this spring. Memorial contributions can be given to the Elk Rapids AmVets Post 114, PO BOX 144, Elk Rapids, MI 49629.
