Sonja Anne Cain, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, was born on August 10, 1947, in Dryden Township, the daughter of William Shafer and Emma Childers. She passed away peacefully on July 14, 2026, surrounded by the family she loved so dearly, following a brief illness.
Sonja will be remembered for her loving heart, her kindness, and her devotion to her family. She had a gentle way of making those around her feel cared for, and the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, and nephews brought her great happiness.
She found joy in gardening, putting together puzzles, sewing, and collecting dolls, a hobby that reflected her tender and thoughtful spirit. More than anything, Sonja loved her grandchildren. They were the greatest joy of her life, and she treasured every moment spent with them.
Sonja is survived by her children, David (Misty) Cain, Sarah (Roger McQueen) Priess, and Amanda (James Grannis) Wiltse; her grandchildren, DJ, Nick, Trevor, Alexis, Emma, and Lillian; and her siblings, Lee Thayer, Bill (Karen) Shafer, Dorry Neighorn, David Shafer, Marietta Chauvin, Nancy (Mike) Simpson, Betty (Jerome) Larson, and Rollie Halstead. She is also survived by many, many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David Cain; her grandson, Andrew Priess; her mother, Emma Halstead; her father, William Shafer; and her siblings, Valerie Shafer, Paul Halstead, and Stewart Shafer.
In keeping with Sonja’s wishes, no services are planned. She will be laid to rest with her beloved husband at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
Those wishing to honor Sonja’s memory may make memorial contributions to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or the Central Lake VFW.
Sonja’s love, kindness, and quiet strength will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. Her memory will be cherished always.
Arrangements are in the care of the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign her online guestbook www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com.
