Robert "Bob" Sumner

Robert James Sumner, 78, of East Jordan, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2022, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born on July 27, 1944, in Boyne City, MI, the son of Philo and Beatrice (Bess) Sumner.

Bob attended Boyne City High school before he proudly served in the United States Army in Germany from 1963 to 1965. He returned home to Northern Michigan where he worked as a mechanic at Jim and Charlie’s in Boyne City as well as Andy’s Garage in Charlevoix, and the Co-op Gas Station as a mechanic in East Jordan. He then spent several years working at East Jordan Ironworks before retiring.

Whether it was fishing the many inland lakes in the area, hunting for deer and rabbit, mushroom hunting, or riding his four-wheeler, he simply loved to spend time outdoors.

Bob is survived by his brother, Randy (Pam) Sumner of Orlando, FL; two sisters, Roxanne Bascom of Manton and Darlene Braun of Austin, TX; sisters-in-law Pat Sumner of Petoskey and Judy Sumner of Charlevoix; his daughter, Cindy Sumner of East Jordan; two grandchildren, Sam (Nicole) Snowden and Greg (Heather) Snowden; and great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leroy Sumner and Thomas Sumner; a sister, Gaylee Anderson; brother-in-law, George Braun; and nephew Edward Sumner.

A funeral service with military honors will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 28, 2023 at the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.  Following the service, there will be light refreshments available and a time to visit until 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Traverse Heart & Vascular within Munson Medical Center, or your local Veteran’s Affairs.
