8 Bells for Richard Thoma
Richard Thoma, resident of Bellaire, was gifted by the Lord with a wonderfully long life of 81 years. He was married to Judy whom they shared 44 loving years of marriage and who was by his side as he went home to be with his Lord. He was surrounded by his loving children Richard, Amanda, and Henry. His struggle is over as he resides in eternal peace in God's presence. Richard served in the US Army spending time in Vietnam where he earned among other medals, the Combat Infantry Man Badge, as well as the Bronze star with Valor designation. Richard spent his working years in the Marine Insurance Industry insuring yachts to ocean going freight cargoes to all parts of the globe. He was a member of numerous marine organizations. He was twice president of the International Propeller Club - Port of Detroit. He was bestowed twice with the honor of being named Mayor - Port of Detroit for his contributions to the Detroit Marine Industry. Richard was active in the sailing community. He sailed and enjoyed racing his boat, "Growl Tiger" with his stalwart crew achieving a number of victories. He sailed 26 Port Huron - Mackinac races, earning the title of "Old Goat". He attended Western Michigan University as well as Thunderbird School of Global Management. He was a life long member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He was a member of Crescent Sail Yacht Club - sailing out of the club for over 66 years starting under the tutelage of Todd Frederick. His wish was for any donations to be directed to Crescent Sail Yacht Club Junior Sailing. Its function is to teach and promote youth sailing, a 501C, at 276 Lake Shore Dr, Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, 48236. Dick always said, "dogs, kids, and old ladies love me". We know a few turtles attempting to cross the close by streets loved him as well as he would see, stop and carry a turtle across the road so it wouldn't get hit. A private family funeral will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are in the care of the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
