Rachel Bishop

Rachel Cornelia Bishop (nee Pickler), of Berkley, Michigan, passed away on May 24, 2026, in Bellaire, Michigan, at the age of 96.

Born on December 23, 1929, in Huntingdon, Tennessee, Rachel came into the world at home and was famously a ten-pound baby who soon won a beautiful baby contest. In the 1940s, she moved with her family to Detroit, Michigan, as part of the Great Migration, when her father found work in the auto industry. She graduated from Denby High School in Detroit in 1947.

In 1952, she married Robert H. Bishop of Detroit and went on to raise four children, mostly as a single mother. Rachel was a dedicated working mother whose career spanned several industries. For a number of years, she owned and operated The Hunt Sign Company in Berkley, Michigan, a business she inherited from her mother-in-law. Before retirement, Rachel enjoyed pinochle, euchre, bowling, bingo, reading, flowers, and rock and roll. She was the “cool” mom, welcoming her children’s friends into her home with warmth and love. She anchored her family for decades and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Rachel is survived by her sons, Robert Jr. (Sheryl), Mark, and Craig, and her daughter, Alice; her granddaughters, Jennifer Lafayatte (Chris), Elizabeth Stanichuk (Rodney), Rebekah Uselman, and Sarah Uselman; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her siblings, JL, Harold, Ruth, Paul, and an infant brother.
