Philip Smith

Philip Donald Smith, 72, passed away October 5th at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.  Phil was born at Meadow Brook March 20, 1951, and lived most of his life in Bellaire. After  graduating from Bellaire Public Schools, he attended Albion College and Michigan State  University.

His love of the outdoors led him to help his parents operate the Bel-Aire Golf Club, work on the  ski slopes of Boyne and Schuss Mountains, and own and operate Phil Smith Irrigation. His  determination and confidence enabled him to build a log home for his family from scratch -  forest to finished.

In the early 1990s, he designed and built with his family, what is now the Centennial Golf Club.

For a few years, Phil lived in Montana. There he spent time as part of a Fire Camp providing  meals for the crews fighting the huge forest fires. He said it was challenging and long hours,  but he enjoyed it! He later returned to Bellaire to live near his grandkids.

In his spare time, he enjoyed vacations in Key West, the National Parks, and reading -  especially books on history. His appreciation for a good debate on a cause he cared about led  him to many a lively argument - usually ending with a smile and a win.

Phil is survived by his son Jeffrey; his grandchildren Sarah and Luke; his brothers Bryan  (Shelley), Michael, and Brad (Amy); as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Joyce.

Phil’s family is grateful to the staff at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility for the loving care  and support they gave Phil during his time there.

A private family gathering will take place at a later date.

Arrangements are in the care of the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.  Please sign his online guestbook at www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com
