Peter Gaskin

Peter Logan Gaskin, 87, of Charlevoix, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, with his family at his side. He was born on June 14, 1938, in Chicago, IL, the son of James and Myrtle (Reinhart) Gaskin.

Pete graduated from Charlevoix High School in 1956, and on July 11, 1959, he married Charlene Novotny at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Charlevoix. Pete joined the United States Navy and served on the USS Jason and several other ships. Upon his discharge, they moved to San Diego California, adopting their son James and then moved home to Charlevoix where Pete and Charlene owned and operated Gaskins Old Time Service for many years. Following his retirement, he continued to work at Brumm’s Studio for several years which he very much enjoyed.

Pete was a longtime member of the East Jordan Sportsman’s Club, the Model T International Club, and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Petoskey. His favorite thing in retirement was spending time teaching his grandson Aidan archery, metalsmithing and anything mechanical in his garage.

Pete is survived by his wife, Charlene Novotny; his son, James (Becky) Gaskin; and his grandson, Aidan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John Gaskin; and his sister, Helen Gaskin.

Pete’s family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to AdvisaCare Hospice for the excellent care they provided Pete.

Pete will be laid to rest in St. Mary’s Cemetery during a private committal service.

Arrangements are in the care of the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook at www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com
