Michael S. Doherty passed away on August 19, 2026, at the age of 47. He was a loving father of a beautiful young boy, Maverick Chase; the dedicated son of Mike and Sharon; the caring brother of sisters Nicole (Jason) Jarrad and Amber (Brett) Harte; the fun loving uncle of a niece Makayla and four nephews Jaxon, Bodhi, Haydn and Carter. He was the center of our world.
Michael lived his life as a free spirit, a world traveler and an entrepreneur. A graduate of Okemos High School and Ball State University's Architecture Program, Michael traveled extensively before returning to the Lansing area where he started the DeFye Clothing label, using his exceptional artistic skills to successfully design and manufacture his clothing in-house for five years.
When the cannabis industry boomed, Michael began Rebel Cannabis Company. All of his life, he had stood up for the underdog, and he reveled in the ability to employ people in need of second chances. He was determined to make a difference with attempts to resurrect the Old John Bean Building with his architectural skills and with his signs posted all over Lansing that promoted "Love Over Hate/Fear"
For all his knowledge and experience, Michael was unprepared for the underhanded ruthlessness of the business world and the lack of empathy from the Courts for traumatized victims. He fought the good fight. As he said, he was just "trying to keep the wolves away."
A private celebration of his life will be held.
Arrangements are in the care of the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook at www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com
