Maxine Johnson

Maxine Genevieve Johnson, 98, of Bellaire, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2026, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. She was born on September 11, 1927, in Bellaire, the daughter of Charles and Emily (Hudcoskety) Dewey.

She graduated from Bellaire High School and afterwards married Elmer Johnson. The couple had two children, Bill and Bob. Maxine took a job at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility where she worked for thirty-two years before retiring to take care of her parents. A big part of her life was being a long-time member of the Bellaire Wesleyan Church that she enjoyed very much, especially singing in the choir.

In her free time Maxine enjoyed playing the piano as well as going to the Bellaire Senior Center for lunch and seeing people. Maxine liked to walk across the street to visit with her sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Leonard Dawson, her nieces and nephews, Julie and Don Derrer and Doug and Lori Dawson. She loved her grandchildren, Matt Johnson and Kari (Paul) Springer. Often together they would visit her favorite U-pick Raspberry field coming home with pails full of berries.

Maxine moved into Meadow Brook in 2017. Since living there, she often enjoyed a refreshing bowl of ice cream from the cart each week with her friends. She liked to go to church services as well as having her hair done frequently. Her family visited often bringing her beautiful flowers and she liked to put on a sun hat and sit in the courtyard under the sunshade. Maxine was a people watcher and liked to visit with her friends during meals and while relaxing.

Maxine is survived by her sons, Bill (Donna) Johnson of Central Lake, and Bob (Debbie) Johnson of Bellaire; two grandchildren, Matt Johnson, and Kari (Paul) Springer; three great-grandchildren, Vince, Rhys, and Maura; her sister, Elaine (Leonard) Dawson; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother, Gene (Esther) Dewey.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Antrim County Commission on Aging.

A funeral service will be held in the spring of 2026, and details will be announced as they are made available.

Arrangements are in the care of the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign her online guestbook at www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com
