Maxine B. Hough, 84, died peacefully in the care of her family, Little Traverse Bay Hospice and her dear friend, Jan Rathbun, on May 18, 2007, at her home on Lake Charlevoix, East Jordan, MI. Her body has been cremated according to her wishes with arrangements by the Bellaire Chapel of the Mortensen Funeral Home. A memorial service celebrating her life is planned for Tuesday, May 22 at 1:00 with the Rev. Peggy Nattermann conducting services at the Boyne City Episcopal Church of the Nativity and military services performed by the Boyne City American Legion Post #228. Maxine was a lifelong educator having worked as a teacher and administrator in several Michigan public schools. She was also a lecturer and consultant for school accreditation at U.of M. While working in Ann Arbor she met Dr. Jack L. Hough, then chair of the U.of M. Oceanography and Geology departments. They married in 1972. Together they retired, designed and built a double masted schooner, Tondeleyo, and sailed the Great Lakes and Atlantic coast. Following world travels and adventures they settled in East Jordan. Her husband preceded her in death in 1989. Maxine served God and Country in many capacities. She was an Air Force WWII veteran and member of the Boyne City American Legion Ernest Peterson Post #228 where she was presently serving as Commander. She initiated the Troop Support program for area deployed troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Maxine was a strong advocate for environmental preservation and worked with the Lake Charlevoix Association and Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council. Maxine enjoyed volunteering at Camp Quality where she served as lifeguard and also lifeguarded at the East Jordan Public Schools under the tutelage of Jamie Smith. She earned medals in swimming competition at the Senior Olympics at the State and National levels. She was a member of The Red Hat Society, MARSP, and the Episcopal Church of the Nativity. Maxine is survived by her daughter, Sandi Larson-Wood and husband William J. Wood of Clare, granddaughters Kristin (Tom) Marvin of Bent Mountain, VA and Brinn Zaika of Mt. Pleasant and grandson Les Leddick of Clare. Her great-grandchildren are Hannah and Sydney Marvin, Halie Leddick, Adriah Zaika and Kail James McQueen. Maxine also loved and enjoyed her step-children Barbara and John Locke of Alexandria, VA, Dr. Tony and Lynn Hough of Detroit, granddaughter Julie (Phil) Wojcik , grandsons Doug Locke, Jack (Alison) Hough and Robert (Vicki) Hough and great-grandchildren Ethan and Henry Wojcik, Sam Hough and Lauren Hough. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the charity of one's choice or to Camp Quality, Little Traverse Bay Hospice or Boyne City American Legion Post #228.
