Martha Ann Beach Trubilowicz passed peacefully at home with her family on April 22, 2025, following a brief illness.
Marty will be deeply missed by her husband, Bill, of Charlevoix; children Dr. Joel Trubilowicz (Amy Thompson) of Calgary, AB, Canada and Anna-Kate (Greg) Cole of Chicago, IL; beloved sisters-in-law, Mary (Bob) Kasprzyk and Nancy (Barry) Moore; dearest friend Mary Harger (Clare Tigchelaar); beloved cousin Pat DeBoer (Dr. Curt Youngblood); siblings Dr. Rebecca Beach and John (Pam) Beach; nieces and nephews Dr. Tim Moore (Dr. Emily Treleaven), Mark Moore, Laura Kasprzyk, Jack Kasprzyk, and Brian Beach; furry friends Wilson, Cookie, and Little Debbie; and countless other friends and family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Vera Beach, and many precious cats, dogs and one guinea pig.
Marty was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin then lived in St. Louis, Missouri until moving with her family to Pigeon, Michigan. She loved spending her summers on Sand Point. She attended Ferris State University then transferred to Western Michigan University, where she graduated with a degree in early childhood education. She later earned her Master’s in speech and language pathology from Oakland University.
She met her beloved husband, Bill, in 1974 on a ski trip to Boyne Mountain in the Snowflake Lounge. They got married on August 27, 1977, the hottest day in a century, in Bad Axe, Michigan, then moved Up North to Petoskey.
They moved to Charlevoix in 1986 and raised their two kids, Joel and Anna-Kate, here. She never missed one of her kids’ tennis matches or ski races, no matter how cold she was standing on the hill. She loved to travel with her family, especially if the travel included seeing a musical, dumpling tasting, taking a trolley tour, Walt Disney World, and/or snorkeling. She made frequent visits to her children after they moved away from Charlevoix to Houghton, MI, Ann Arbor, MI, Vancouver, BC, Victoria, BC, Chicago IL, Kamloops BC, and Calgary, AB. Marty and Bill enjoyed their morning coffee together almost every day.
She loved the children she worked with in her career as a speech and language pathologist for the Charlevoix-Emmet ISD. Her kindness to her former students, who called her “Mrs. Marty,” and colleagues is remembered warmly. She enjoyed spending time on their boat, “Tubitz,” during her summers off, especially taking trips to Mackinac Island.
From almost the first year we arrived in Charlevoix, the “Supper Club” was established with three of our closest families: the V. Woods, Carlands and Brendtro/Sengers. Together we raised our families and shared hundreds of meals and adventures. The club continues to meet today.
From her first job at a flower shop in high school, she had a deep love of flowers and nature. She earned her Master Gardener certification, managed the UCC church gardens, and could often be found in her extensive home gardens. She also enjoyed watching the birds, deer, and other critters in her yard, so it is fitting she passed on Earth Day.
In her retirement, she enjoyed trying new things, like singing in the Northern Michigan Chorale, developing the perfect pie crust, learning to quilt and knit, taking cooking classes at Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor, and picking up her flute after a 30 year hiatus. She was a voracious reader, with a book or her Kindle never far from her hands. She was a passionate sports fan, especially college basketball and football, and she attended University of Michigan football games for more than 25 years. She and Bill enjoyed spending a few months away from Charlevoix, to Matlacha and St Augustine Florida in the winter and the Upper Peninsula at De Tour VIllage in the summer.
If she saw something that needed to be done, she was always ready to jump in and do it. She was an active Charlevoix resident, organizing the Annual Cookie Walk, volunteering for the Charlevoix Community Christmas Project, and playing the flute in the Charlevoix City Band. She served as an “Honor Flight” chaperone for a veteran flight to Washington DC.
The family will be hosting a visitation on April 29 from 5 to 7 pm at Mortensen Funeral Home in Charlevoix. A funeral service will be held on April 30 at 11 am at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Charlevoix, followed by a luncheon in the church’s Fellowship Hall.
For friends that cannot attend in person, the service will be streamed online at: https://tinyurl.com/4uav6zhd
We would like to thank the staff at Munson Charlevoix Hospital, our hospice nurse, Heather B, Dr Laura Ford and all of our friends for the kind words and support.
Marty was kind, generous and unflappable. She loved to laugh. She fashioned a ministry for herself to reach out and help other people in whatever way she could. The best way we can honor her memory is by establishing our own ministry of service. Be a Marty!
Memorial donations in her honor can be made to the Charlevoix County Humane Society or the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Charlevoix.
Arrangements are in the care of the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
