Marilyn Clara (Grice) Harvey, 95, was born on July 1, 1928, in Detroit, to Leonard P. (Al) and Helen (Litkovitz) Grice.
At a very young age Marilyn started playing trumpet and the drums at age 11. She played with All City Band and Orchestra at that young age as well. She also played in an all female band during World War II where she travelled for 6 months then returned to finish her education.
She graduated from Cass Tech High School Music Department in 1946, then graduated from Wayne State University in 1950 with a B.S. in Music Education. In 1960 she also earned a B.A. in Elementary Education.
Her career began as the Band Director at Lakeview High School and Elementary where she started the Instrumental Music Program. She then was hired in several years later to teach 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades at St. Clare in Gross Pointe where she stayed for 13 years and then a volunteer tutor for 3 years.
Marilyn married Robert (Bob) Harvey in 1951. They had 2 sons, Robert A. and Thomas C.
Following her retirement, her and Bob moved to Big Twin Lake in Mancelona in 1986. She enjoyed bowling at the Mancelona Lanes, Timber Lanes and Lucky Jacks in Traverse City. She also loved to golf along with Bob at the Lakes of the North League as well as Twin Birch In Kalkaska and Grandview Leagues.
She was preceded in death by Bob in 1993, son Robert in 2005, son Tom in 2009 and her sister Helen.
Following Bob’s passing, she moved to a condo in Williamsburg, MI, in 1998. At 70, she joined Encore Wind Symphony, NMC Community Band all in Traverse City and Northern Michigan Brass Band in Gaylord, where she played Timpani and Percussion, retiring at 90.
She moved to Boardman Glens Assisted Living Homes where she had made many friends among the residents and staff.
Surviving are a sister Lee Mackay and family, as well as many, nieces, nephews and cousins.
A Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday, January 4, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona with Fr. Matthew Cowan officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Kalkaska.
