Karen Lee Yuhaus, 81, of Bellaire, MI, formerly of Richardson, TX, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 14, 2026, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. She was born on July 3, 1945, in Highland Park, MI, the daughter of George and Gertrude (Wilson) Schmidt.
Karen graduated from Osborne High School in 1964 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education from Wayne State University. She taught elementary school in the Detroit area for several years before moving in 1977 with her two children to Richardson, TX. She taught for a short time in the Dallas Independent School District as well. She eventually changed careers and worked as a customer service representative for Blue Cross Blue Shield. Karen enjoyed helping those she served and always advocated for them over the course of her 33 years with the company.
Karen loved her family – especially her grandchildren – more than anything else, and she cherished every moment spent with them. She was very involved at Concordia Lutheran Church in Garland, TX, for many years. She taught English as a Second Language, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, and went on multiple mission trips to Alaska to serve the Native Inuit people. Karen volunteered much of her time for The Lighthouse for the Blind, where she helped assemble bibles in braille. She also enjoyed hiking, swimming, birdwatching, and spending as much time as she could in God’s creation.
Karen is survived by her children, David (Jessica) Yuhaus of Bellaire and Debbie Wilbur of Rowlett, TX; her sister, Maurine LeCocq of Bedford, TX; and four grandchildren, David Yuhaus III, Abigayle Yuhaus, Brian Wilbur Jr., and Austin Wilbur.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration of Karen’s life will take place in Texas at a later date.
Arrangements are in the care of the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign her online guestbook at www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com
