Joseph Stanley McDermott

Joseph (Joe) Stanley McDermott of Charlevoix, MI found solitary peace on 11-7-2023 at Grandview Medical Care Facility in East Jordan, MI.  Joe was born to Sophrona Vossberg McDermott and Robert “Mick” McDermott on May 31, 1935 in Charlevoix, MI. He grew up in Charlevoix and was a golden gloves boxer, played high school football and was a golf caddie at the Belvedere Golf Club as a teenager. Joe enjoyed golfing, cross-country skiing, wood-working, drawing cartoon characters, camping, bicycling, walking and traveling. He took great pride in his yard, home and vehicles. He was instrumental in the development of the Golden Gloves Boxing Academy at the East Jordan Civic Center.  He dedicated his career to the East Jordan Iron Works and retired as the Superintendent (white hat) of the Grinding Room. He was known as a dedicated member of the organization, hardworking with attention to detail, and a passionate motivator!

Joe is survived by: his wife Pauline McDermott children; Jody Purifoy Reeves, Cathy Griffore, Kristine Roy, Jill Austin, Patti Fuller, and Lewis (Butch) Wright; and siblings; Robbie McDermott, Kitty Faulkner and Betty Slade. He has many grandchildren and great grandchildren who have brought him joy through the years. He was greeted in passing by his parents, daughter Kelly Conway, brother Robert McDermott, and sister Nancy Currier.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, November 12, 2023 at the Mortensen Funeral Home in Charlevoix Michigan from 3-5pm with a Sharing of Memories at 4:30. Memorial Contributions may be directed to the Charlevoix Public Library.
