John Carlo Ketola

John Carlo Ketola, 77, of Bellaire, Michigan, passed away on December 27, 2025, where he joined the love of his life of 52 years, Jeanette Ketola, in Heaven.

John spent most of his life in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, a place he deeply loved, before moving to Northern Michigan to be closer to family. He loved everything about the U.P. and was especially proud to be called a true “Yooper.” He loved all his family and friends dearly and was also considered “a second dad” to many of his children’s friends while they were growing up. John especially loved the opportunity to host his friends, often bringing people together for summer parties and bonfires filled with laughter.

Some of his favorite moments included summer barbeques on Johnson Lake, snow plowing with his grandson Nolan, pontoon boat rides, and a competitive game of cribbage. He had a special love for all animals—especially dogs—and was a devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Lions, loyally supporting them through every season, even through all their disappointments.

John graduated from Gwinn High School in 1966 and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management from Northern Michigan University. After college, he worked for Cleveland-Cliffs and later Barton Malow, gaining valuable experience in the construction industry. He eventually pursued his lifelong dream of owning his own company, proudly working as a General Contractor.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Jeanette Ketola; his parents, Carlo and Nina Ketola; and his brother-in-law, Jerry Vertanen.

John is survived by his son, Todd Ketola (Connie) of Brighton, MI; daughter Lori Ketola of St. Petersburg, FL; grandson Nolan Ketola of Brighton, MI; sister Nora DiLaura (David) of Rochester Hills, MI; Nina Vertanen of Ames, IA; Carla Ketola of DeBary, FL; and many extended family members and dear friends.

John will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Arrangements are in the care of the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com
