Joanne Elaine Carlson, 78, of Charlevoix, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2020 at home. She was born on January 3, 1942 in East Lansing, Michigan, the daughter of Roderick and Margaret Smith. Joanne grew up in Romulus, Michigan, where she graduated from high school. Later, she moved to Charlevoix, Michigan to raise her three children. Joanne spent many years working in the Central Office for Charlevoix Public Schools, where she made many friends with her infectious smile and kind heart.

Joanne was a long-time member of the Community Reformed Church, and she loved singing in the choir and spending time with her small group. She enjoyed quality time with her loved ones and working in her garden. More than anything, she took pride in being a steadfast and unwavering mother, Nana, sister, friend, and follower of Christ.

She is survived by 2 sisters, Zetta Wojcik of Wilton, ME, and Michaele Smith of New Port Richey, FL, 3 children, Boogie (Lisa) Carlson of Charlevoix, MI, Michelle (Kyle) Jones of Livonia, MI, and Jack (Susan) Carlson of Dexter, MI, 6 grandchildren, many beloved nieces and nephews, cousins, and a community of many that she loved like family.

Joanne was predeceased by her brothers, Rick Smith, David Smith, Jerome Smith, brother-in-law Tom Wojcik and sister Sandi Soley.

Joanne’s life will be celebrated with a service on Wednesday, September 23rd, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law Boogie and Lisa Carlson at 105 Eaton Avenue, Charlevoix, MI 49720. The family will greet visitors at 5:00pm, and the service will begin at 5:30pm, with a meal to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Reformed Church.
