Janet Jones

Janet Marie Jones, 80, of Charlevoix, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 3, 2024, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.  She was born on April 17, 1943, in Wyandotte, MI, the daughter of Leonard and Mary (Haxer) Prebes.

Janet worked for the City of Dearborn for over 20 years, with her last position being an Ordinance officer and later fulfilled a similar position for the City of Charlevoix when she moved here permanently in 2009.  She was also a regular attendee of mass at St. Marys Catholic Church in Charlevoix.

Janet loved her family above all else; she had a zest for life that brought her on many adventures, but she always put them first.  Included in her family were her beloved King Charles Cavaliers; Solo (deceased), Sailor, and Sperry.  Janet was an avid collector of Petoskey Stones, and could tell you where she picked each one from in her collection.  Some of her most favorite time was spent traveling in the motor home to camp in the U.P. with her husband Larry, and she made sure they found a spot overlooking the lake.  She would spend hours watching freighters pass by at the Soo Locks as well.  She also enjoyed baking, shopping for fashionable clothes, and boating.

On May 9, 1986, in Redford, MI, Janet married the love of her life, Larry Jones, who survives.  Also surviving are her two children, Mark Tonge of Taylor, MI, and Karen (Tony) Belzak of Livonia; two grandchildren, Courtney Tonge and Kristin Tonge; and three sisters, Margaret Click of Allen Park, MI, Mary Ann Newton of Horton, MI, and Agnes (Glen) Long of Parma, MI as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will take place at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 12, 2024 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Charlevoix.  Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, at the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741 or the Father Solanus Guild, 1820 Mt. Elliott St., Detroit, MI 48207
