Janet A. (Hampton) Morrison

Janet A. (Hampton) Morrison, 94, of Wilmington NC peacefully passed away on October 28, 2026, at the Lower Cape Fear Life Care Hospice Center. She was born in Detroit MI and married her high school sweetheart in 1958. She was the daughter of Frances and Victor Hampton (from Charlevoix MI) and is survived by her husband Gerald (Jerry) Morrison and daughter Megan Morrison. Jan was predeceased by her sister Sharon (Hampton) McCollough.

Jan grew up in Detroit and attended Redford High School. She attended Michigan State University where she made lasting friends at the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. She also attended Wayne State University and earned a teaching degree. She taught elementary school for several years in the Detroit area and substitute taught while raising Megan. Shortly after Jerry retired from Chrysler Corporation, they moved to Wilmington, NC in 1992.

When they were first married, Jerry encouraged Jan to learn to snow ski and the family enjoyed skiing at Boyne Country resorts (northern MI) on weekends with two other families. There were yearly ski trips out West, a time share at Snowbird, and a ski trip to Switzerland. She also competed in a couple of NASTAR races. Jan last snow skied at 80 years old, and the lift ticket was free! Jan and Jerry also joined competitive tennis leagues and played doubles and mixed doubles into their 80s. Her other passion was bridge which she played until she was 90.

Jan will be remembered for her mischievous sparkle, smile, and laughter. She had a fun-loving, teasing sense of humor and enjoyed participating in social activities and exercise classes while at independent and assisted living communities later in life.

Jan is the great granddaughter of Dr. Carlos D. Hampton, first mayor/village president of Harbor Springs in 1881. Her grandfather, Will E. Hampton Sr., owner and editor of the Charlevoix Democrat and mayor of Charlevoix in 1907 wrote the letter that led to the construction of Charlevoix’s Carnegie Library.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Harbor Springs Area Historical Society are welcome.

Arrangements are in the care of the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign her online guestbook www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com.
