Irene Mitchell

Irene May Mitchell, 88, of East Jordan, passed away on May 19, 2024. She was born on February 28, 1936, on Beaver Island, the daughter of Alex and Ester (Washegesic) Cornstalk.

Irene enjoyed doing crafts. She was a very social person and left everyone she met throughout her life happy to have known her. Irene, along with her late husband Mike, were avid mushroom hunters. She enjoyed having family get-togethers, helping elders, taking care of children, and telling stories of her childhood on Beaver Island. Fishing and camping with her friends and family were always high on her list. Irene and Mike went to almost every festival that Northern Michigan had to offer. Long rides on the back roads were also one of her favorite pastimes.

Surviving Irene in death are her five children, Glenn McSawby of East Jordan, Gary McSawby of Petoskey, Sandra McSawby of Charlevoix, Lois (Greg) Peplow of Gaylord, Matt (Paulene) Boulton of Petoskey, two sisters, Helen Paul of East Jordan, Alvina NaPont of East Jordan, seventeen grandchildren, Michael Jr, Kimberly, Charles, Jessica, James, Summer, Lucas, Debbie, David, Pedro, Shelly, Sandra, Melissa, Clint, Crigh, and Alexander, nine great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death are her parents and siblings Sarah, Harvey, Frank, Thomas, Alex, Louise, and Roseanne. 

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 22, at Greensky Hill United Methodist Church, at 11 am. A funeral service will be held at 12 noon, immediately following the visitation.
