Herbert L. Carpenter Sr., 94, of Central Lake, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. He was born on February 5, 1932, in Central Lake, the son of Anson R. and Helen Marie (Barrow) Carpenter.
Herb graduated from Central Lake High School in 1949 and then enlisted in the United States Air Force. After his father passed away unexpectedly, he was granted a hardship discharge so he could return home to take care of his family. He worked for General Telephone company for many years in a variety of different capacities. In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking and camping when he could, especially in Grand Marais. Herb was a self taught jack of all trades and he could work on just about anything; he did small projects for many folks in the area. Many will remember seeing him cruising around in his Mustang convertible. He will be deeply missed by many.
Herbert is survived by his children, Carol (Bob) Rowe of Piney Flats, TN, Susan (Carl) Veenstra of Ellsworth, Robert Carpenter of Ellsworth, and Ann (Don) Bemiss of Tahoe Vista, CA; his sister, Margaret Gatwood of California; a grandson, Andy Miller; a great-grandson, Aidan Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Betty Carpenter; his son, Herb Carpenter Jr.; two sisters, Arlene Moses and Joyce Burns; a brother, Dan Carpenter; and a grandson, Hunter Veenstra.
There will be no services held at this time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Antrim County Animal Shelter, 4660 M-88, Central Lake, MI 49622.
Arrangements are in the care of the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook at www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com
