Forest "Earl" Muma

Forest “Earl” Muma, lovingly known to many as “Earl,” passed away on March 27, 2026, in Charlevoix, Michigan, at the age of 92. He was born on May 14, 1933, in East Jordan, Michigan, and lived a long life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a steady, gentle presence that touched all who knew him.

He started his service to his country as an aircraft technician in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and served active duty through the Vietnam War. He served with the 59th Fighter Squadron as well as the 61st Fighter Squadron. He then served in the United States Air Force Reserves as a member of the 305 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron, Selfridge ANGB until retirement at the rank of Chief Master Sargent in 1997.

In 1967, he moved to Charlevoix, where after working for a short time as an auto mechanic, he purchased the Sinclair Service Station located on the corner of Bridge Street and Belvedere Avenue. Earl was known as a very hard-working man who did whatever was necessary to provide a good life for his family, and he carried that same determination into every part of his life.

He served the citizens of Charlevoix as a council person, volunteered as a member of the Charlevoix County Sheriff’s Posse, Supervisor for Norwood Township for a spell and as the Emergency Services Director for Charlevoix County.

Earl was a loving, handy, and gentle man whose talents and interests were as memorable as his character. He loved hot rods and classic cars, restoring corvettes and drag racing.

Those who knew him will remember that he was called “Earl”, a name spoken with affection and respect. He had a quiet strength and a warm heart, and he made a lasting impression with practical wisdom, and his steady care for those around him. Family and friends will remember his willingness to help, and the comfort of his presence.

As the well-known quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson reminds us, “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Forest “Earl” Muma surely lived a life that made the lives of others easier, fuller, and better.

He is survived by his sons, Allen Muma and Robert Muma; his daughter, Sharon Seymour, his grandson, Justin Muma, granddaughters Shelby Seymour, Tabitha Milewski, and Alanah Muma; and his youngest brother Gerald Muma. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Majorie Muma; his father, Forest Amber Muma; his mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Muma; his brothers, Richard Muma and Robert “Bob” Muma.

Earl Muma leaves behind a legacy of devotion, resilience, and love. His life was one of steady purpose and quiet accomplishment, and he will be remembered with deep affection by all whose lives he touched.
