Flora Wynsma

Flora Wynsma, 96, of Atwood, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at her home with her family at her side. She was born on April 8, 1930, the daughter of Jacob and Engberdena (VanderHeide) Veenstra.

Flora graduated from Ellsworth High School and then attended Calvin College for a short time before moving back home. On August 21, 1953, at the Atwood Christian Reformed Church, she married the love of her life, Thomas Wynsma. Flora took great pride in raising their four children in the same community she was raised in. After they were grown, she and Tom owned and operated the Atwood Shopping Center for over 20 years.

Flora loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; even when they weren’t with her, she loved simply admiring pictures of them – of which there were many. After they sold the store, she and Tom did some traveling, but their favorite place to be was together on the deck watching birds eat on the bird feeder or catching a sunset. She was a dedicated member of the Atwood Christian Reformed Church until they closed their doors and has been at the Ellsworth Christian Reformed Church since. For a number of years, she handed out Gideon’s bibles, and she donated whenever she could to the Good Samaritan.

Flora is survived by her three sons, Timothy (Sue) Wynsma of Newburg, OR, Stephen (Linda) Wynsma of Long Beach, CA, and Kevin Wynsma of Atwood; five grandchildren, Phillip (Lauren), Ben (Emily), Sam, Rebecca (Connor), and Rachel; seven great-grandchildren; her sister, Jennie Vandekieft; and sisters-in-law, Betty, Carol, Donna, Janice, Arlene, and Patsy.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas Wynsma; her daughter, DeeAnn Wynsma Matthews; and several siblings.

A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at the Ellsworth Christian Reformed Church with Pastor Josiah Youngquist officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday, July 6, at the Ellsworth Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
