Esther Carey

Esther Carrie Carey (Hansen) of Charlevoix passed into heaven on February 2, 2022 at 100 years old, with her beloved children nearby. She was born in the family home on Norwood Road Nov 16, 1921, to Christian and Louisa Hansen. On Jan 12, 1945 she married Thomas Leo Carey, whom she met in 1st grade at Charlevoix Elementary School. She married Tom in San Francisco during World War II. Tom said, “She chased me all the way to the Pacific Ocean and since I couldn’t swim, I decided to marry her.” Through joy and sorrow, their marriage of 67 years bore witness to Tom’s good judgment and their devotion to one another, their family and community.

Esther’s long career as a Registered Nurse at Charlevoix Area Hospital, touched the lives of countless people. Her 7 children adored her. Putting everyone else's needs above her own, she quietly served her church and her community in ways we know and in ways we will never know. Her home and kitchen were always open to family and friends.

She is survived by her children Denny (Margaret), of Traverse City, Brad (Cathy), of London Ontario, Chris Carter of Cincinnati Ohio, Jean Remillet (John) of Grosse Pointe, Ellie Carey (Larry) of Suttons Bay, and Ross (Corinne) of Bloomfield Hills. Husband Tom and Son Andy preceded her in death. Also survived by 19 Grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews .

Services will be held on Saturday, May 28th, 2022. Graveside service will be at 1PM for family, followed at 2 PM with Celebration of Life at Christ Episcopal Church in Charlevoix. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, PO BOX 718, East Jordan, MI 49727, designated for the Peggy Carey Northway fund.
