Emory Clyde Sloan

Emory C. Sloan, 85 of Charlevoix died Monday, December 11, 2023 at Boulder Park Terrace.  He was born June 16, 1938 in Gate City, Virginia and graduated from Yaeger High School in 1956.

Upon graduation, Emory proudly entered the U.S. Army where he served for 4 years and then went on to join the U.S. Coast Guard, eventually retiring with over 20 years of dedicated service.  Being in the service allowed Emory to travel the world including places like the Philippians, Vietnam, the Bering Sea, Alaska, California, Duluth, MN and many other wonderful places too.  The military service life is a family affair with 4 of his grandsons currently serving and his son Major Douglas Sloan losing his life in Afghanistan while serving during Operation Enduring Freedom.

Emory was a history buff with all that traveling that enriched his life.  He was also an avid hunter and enjoyed a round of golf in his younger years.  He worked for several years at Big Rock Nuclear Plant and was also a counselor at the Charlevoix County Veterans Affairs.  He was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.  He was also a member of Greensky Hill Church.

On November 3, 1962 in Ironton, he married the love of his life, Wendy Joan (Knudsen) Sloan who survives.  Also surviving are his son James (Renee) Sloan of Dorr, brother James Sloan of WV, grandchildren Dylan, Aiden, Kellan, Kenley, Henry, Austin, Logan (Isabelle), Connor, and Doug, mothers of his son Doug’s children Amy Vought and Kerry Turner-Sloan, brother-in-law Peter Knudsen, sisters-in-law Marie (Mike) Yettaw and Glenda (John) Ferguson, several nieces and nephews, and good friends Mark and Wendy Simmons and Ernie and Brenda Brasseau.  He was preceded in death by his son Douglas Sloan in 2006, parents, and sister-in-law Betty Jo Sloan.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 18, at 12 noon at the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.  Interment with military honors will follow at Brookside Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 am. until the time of service. The family will also receive friends on Sunday, December 17 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. also at the funeral home.
