Edward Leslie Holm, 78, of Charlevoix, passed away peacefully on Friday, June 6, 2025, at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. He was born on November 18, 1946, in Charlevoix, the son of Harold and Evelyn "Peg" (Gibbard) Holm.
Ed graduated from Charlevoix High School and then attended Northern Michigan College in Traverse City. In February of 1967, he enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He earned the rank of SP5, and was awarded a Purple Heart along with several other medals for his courageous service to his country. He returned home to Charlevoix in December of 1968, and on May 22, 1971, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Petoskey, he married the love of his life, Mary Jo Czerkis. They planted their roots in Charlevoix and raised three children together.
Ed immensely enjoyed spending time with family and friends doing the things he loved. He cherished playing cards and taking Sunday afternoon car rides with his wife. Ed had always been a sports fanatic; he played football and baseball in high school and was as athletic as they came. He continued to play slowpitch and fastpitch softball into adulthood and was a cornerstone of the Barnard Braves team for many years. Ed was also known to share advice and speak his mind to the umpires – something he may have inherited from his father. He nurtured a love for all sports in his children- especially softball. This was evidenced by the ballfield they had in their yard growing up.
Ed wore a lot of hats over the years; he worked with his father at Holm Auto Sales, and was employed at Kit-Carson Lumber, American Mold, and Consumers Energy Big Rock Plant. In particular, he was very proud to serve his fellow veterans while working as the Charlevoix County Veterans Affairs Director. Ed also volunteered much of his time with the Charlevoix Township Fire Department, American Legion Post 226, AMVETS Michigan, the Knights of Columbus, Disabled American Veterans, the VFW, and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
As he got older, he shifted gears from softball to golf- enjoying any time spent on the course. Ed especially cherished the memories from the Thursday night league at Antrim Dells and Tuesday night league at Charlevoix Country Club. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling, and camping throughout his lifetime, and one of his favorite pastimes was mowing the lawn while enjoying a good cigar. Ed and Mary Jo loved watching sports together- especially cheering on MSU Spartan basketball & football, along with Detroit Tigers baseball.
Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mary Jo (Czerkis) Holm. Also surviving are three children: Tim (Ginna) Holm of Battle Creek, MI, Tammy (Brent) Peyton of Taylorsville, KY, and Trina Holm of Sault Ste. Marie, MI; seven grandchildren: Cayge Holm, Elisabeth (Clinton) Wallace, Grace Holm, Wyatt Mattson, Sydney Peyton, Garrett (Cameron) Peyton, and Dalton (Jenna) Peyton; and two great-grandchildren: Ezariah & Eliana Wallace.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A funeral mass will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 13, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Charlevoix. Visitation will be held at the church on Thursday, June 12, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with a rosary beginning at 8:00. There will be another visitation on Friday from 1:00 p.m. until mass begins at 2:00.
