E. Kay Mason

Evangeline Kay “Bubba” Mason, 79, of Bellaire, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 20, 2026, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. Kay was born on April 18, 1947, on the Mason farm in Bellaire, the daughter of Dorr and Betty (Martin) Mason.

Kay attended Bellaire Public Schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. In junior high and high school, she played center on the basketball team, standing 5”9” tall. She was also a majorette and played the flute in the school band. In 1965, Kay was accepted into the Vista Program where she helped underprivileged children in Washington State, Florida, and Texas. In 1966, she married Bill Chapman of Detroit.

In 1980, Kay moved to Royal Oak; she co-owned Renshaw Lounge and Pizzeria in Clawson for many years. She often hosted family and friends providing great food and gifted many people with tickets to professional sports games. Following her retirement, she moved back home to Bellaire.

She was a faithful attendant of Pilgrim of Holiness Church (Wesleyan) since childhood where she was saved and baptized. She became a teacher of bible study students in prisons all over the country. Kay also supported many children in third world countries and gave regularly to the Jews for Christ organization.

Kay was an avid reader, often finishing a novel in just one day. She was extremely generous by passing along books for others to enjoy. She was a great poet just like her father, Dorr; the family had to be careful around both of them because they would write about their mishaps. One of Kay’s favorite pastimes was watching sports always rooting for the Detroit teams, especially the Tigers!

In 2024, Kay moved to Meadow Brook where she lived until her passing. She was proud to serve as the president of the book club. She made many beautiful memories with the other residents and staff alike. Kay’s family would like to thank the staff for their love, kindness, and care, which made them feel more like family, with special thanks to Joe and Amber.

Kay will be remembered for her big, caring, giving heart, and her smart & sassy sense of humor. Her biggest wish was for her family and friends to come to know Jesus as their personal LORD and savior.

Her nickname “Bubba” was given by her grandson Donovan who couldn’t say grandma and instead called her Bubba. The name stuck and it was her favorite name to be called.

Kay is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Tim) Mosher; her grandchildren, Donovan (Alyssa) Duran and Brandon (Jessie) Barnett; her great-grandchildren, Kaydence (Chris) Duran and Donovan I. Duran; her siblings, Roger (Terry) Mason, Richard Mason, Sherrie (Dan) McIntosh, George (Cindy) Mason, Hugh (Shelly) Chase, and Becky (Dave) Corbin; her brother-in-law, Aaron Smith; and so many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dorr and Betty Mason, and her sister, Debbie Smith.

A funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m. pm Tuesday, August 25, at Fresh Start Wesleyan Church in Bellaire, with Roger Mason officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the time of services at 2:00. She will be laid to rest in Lakeview Cemetery.
