Edith Alma (Adams) Bershas, 96, of Chelsea, Michigan passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, after a brief illness surrounded by her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard “Dick” Bershas in 1988 and her parents John and Edith Adams.
Known as Alma to her friends and family, she was born February 21, 1929 in Detroit, Michigan. Alma graduated from Southeastern High School on June 20, 1947 and was in the top of her class.
Alma and Dick were married on April 19, 1952. They raised their family in Detroit and Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan. In the late seventies they began spending time at Torch Lake, Michigan and eventually purchased a second home there. They spent many happy years there.
Alma retired in 1989 from her position at Wayne County Friend of the Court, a place where she was proud of her work to help families in difficult situations. In 1997, she moved to Chelsea, Michigan. There she became an avid and treasured volunteer for Chelsea Community Hospital and Silver Maples of Chelsea. She was deeply involved in the Michigan Axillary Hospital Association for many years and was honored to serve as its President.
She is survived by her daughter Susan Olexa (Don); daughter Kathy Bershas-Varian (David); son Joseph Bershas (Julie); and daughter Janice Trouba (James). She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
Alma was an incredible wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was extremely devoted to her family and took great pride in her children and grandchildren’s accomplishments. You could always count on Alma starting a conversation with everyone she met and making them feel like they had been her friend for years. She will be deeply missed by her entire family, who are grateful for the many wonderful years they were able to share with her.
A private graveside service will be held at Lakeview Cemetery in Torch Lake on June 3, 2025.
