Douglas E. Shoemaker

It is with profound sadness that I share the passing of Douglas Edward Shoemaker. Who left us on Friday, March 7th, 2025, at the age of 67 in Leelanau County Michigan. Douglas is survived by his daughter Lindsey Carroll, his sons Joshua Shoemaker and Nathan Shoemaker, his stepson Brandon Lantz, and his six grandsons.

Douglas was born in Holland, MI on December 11th, 1957. He attended West Ottawa High School in Holland, MI and graduated in 1976. During his high school years his love for the water took hold. He was a member of his high school’s swimming and diving team and made it to state for his diving. After high school he worked many different jobs including professional lake management, truck driving, and professional painting. He attended Northwestern Michigan University later in life to study art.

Douglas had a profound passion for life and had many different hobbies. He was an excellent fisherman, an avid hunter, an amazing artist, and loved collecting rocks. He loved living in Northern Michigan and enjoyed spending time on all the different lakes, rivers, and nature preserves. He was very active in his community and had many friends. His kindness and patience were endless, and he cared so much for everyone around him. He would not hesitate to lend a helping hand to those who needed it.

Despite dealing with heavy medical issues, he always stayed active. He would travel around to different beaches to catch the sunset or stop into his favorite restaurant for a fish sandwich. Whatever life seemed to throw at him he always stayed positive and hoped for the best. He had a clear faith in God which helped him work through all the adversities that life sent his way.

He will always be remembered as a loving father, a caring brother, and a dear friend. He truly lived his life to the fullest. A celebration of life will be held in his honor on June 28th, 2025 at 1pm at William Good Day Park at 12201 Public Dock Rd, Kewadin, MI 49648. All are welcome to attend to celebrate his life.

Arrangements are in the care of the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook at www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com
