Doris Hayes

Doris Ellen Hayes, 99, passed away peacefully Saturday, February 27, 2021 at her care home, A Place on the Hill near Charlevoix, Michigan.

Doris was born June 30, 1921, in East Jordan, the daughter of Edward and Effie (Cook) Weldy.
She graduated from East Jordan High School in 1938 and on Feb. 3, 1940, married Rolland Hayes in East Jordan.  Together they raised two children, Albert and Frances.  They lived in Detroit until 1945 before moving back to East Jordan and eventually settling in Charlevoix in 1955.

Doris loved having lunch with games after at the Charlevoix Senior Center. She was an avid card player playing often with Julia and her special neighbor, Linda Cousino.  She played Bridge weekly with friends for years.  She also enjoyed spending time reading and moved to audio books after she lost her sight. Other pastimes were quilting, gardening and knitting blankets for her family. Doris worked for many years as a bank teller for what is now Charlevoix State Bank.

She was one of the first to volunteer, working for years at the Rainbow Shop where she knew the funds remained in Charlevoix to help the less fortunate.  She loved being outdoors and taking long walks daily!  She joined the annual Crop Walk to donate her time and money to feed the hungry. She walked daily with Linda until she was no longer able.

Doris loved to travel with Rolland to visit their daughter Fran and her grands (as she called them) which filled her with hours of pleasure as they went to London, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, Paris, and Italy. After Rolland died, she traveled often with a tour group around the US and Canada making friends everywhere she went.

Some of her fondest memories were hosting visits with her grandchildren and great grandchildren in Charlevoix. She loved re-reading letters, cards and gifts from them.

Doris is survived by her daughter, Frances (Jim) Anderson of Scotland; grandchildren Jennifer (Steve) Fisk of Stevenage, England, Victoria Anderson of Lowestoft, England, Jim (Ingrid) Hayes of Midland, Michigan, Joe (Brenda) Hayes of Petoskey, Michigan; seven great grandchildren Jack, Emily, George, Mason, Madeline, Mitchell, Chloe; and many nieces & nephews.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Rolland in 1996; sisters Margaret Faust and Ardith Hayden; son Albert Hayes; daughter in-law Ruth Hayes-Evans.

A sincere thanks to Doris’s caregiver Julia Heddle and more recently Tacy Johnson. She felt loved and blessed.
