Donald Edward Schuiteman

 

Donald Edward Schuiteman, 88, passed away December 9, 2022.  He was born May 9, 1934 in Muskegon, Michigan to the late Clifford and Dena (Batten) Schuiteman, 

  He married Helen Allen in 1954.  Donald graduated from North Muskegon High School, Michigan State University with a Bachelor Degree, and Saginaw Valley State with a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice.  He was in the Armed Forces from 1954 to 1956 and joined the Michigan State Police in 1956, retiring in 1980 as Lieutenant Specialist.  After retirement he was Chief of Police in Burton, in charge of Northern Evidence Services out of Gaylord, a bus driver for Bellaire Schools, sold real estate and did substitute teaching in high schools.

   Don enjoyed being involved in many community activities – Rotary Club, Area Agency on Aging, Northern Michigan Substance Abuse, and County Commissioner to name a few.  He loved his cabin in the U.P., fishing, hunting, and playing golf.

   Donald was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 68 years Helen Ardis Schuiteman, three children Judy (Harry/Buster) Sutton, Jay (Debora) Schuiteman, Lynn (Tim) Werner, eight grandchildren, Mathew Sutton, Andrew Sutton, Alison Atchison, Tyler Schuiteman, Morgan Dewit, Logan Stebelton, Grant Werner, thirteen great grandchildren Aidan Byrne, Catherine Byrne, Harrison Sutton, Leighton Sutton, Dylan Werner, Wyatt Atchison, Wesley Atchison, Emmett Sutton, June Sutton, Isaiah Dewit, Easton Schuiteman and sister JoAnn Kantola.  He was preceded in death by his siblings Janet Coverly, Raymond Schuiteman, Clark Schuiteman, Richard Schuiteman, granddaughter Jamie Byrne, great granddaughters Dawson Atchison and Ryan Atchison.

   Funeral services will take place Thursday, December 15, at 3 p.m. at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes with the family receiving friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service.  A luncheon will follow at the Bellaire Senior Center.   Memorial contributions can be given to the Fallen Trooper Memorial Fund, 1715 Abbey Rd, Ste B, East Lansing, MI 48823 or Michigan State Police (MSP) Association Hardship Fund, PO BOX 11022, Lansing, MI 48901.
