Don Jeakle, 92, of Charlevoix, Michigan, passed away on February 16, 2024, with family by his side. He was born on February 28, 1931, to Louise and William Jeakle in Detroit, Michigan. He grew up in Detroit with three brothers and attended U of D High School and University of Detroit before serving in the army during the Korean War.
He met Margaret Bannan, who was working as a nurse at Mount Carmel Hospital, and they were married on October 24, 1959, at St. Paul Church in Owosso, Michigan. Married 54 years, they raised their family in the Detroit area, and then moved to Arizona for a short time, but moved back to Charlevoix in 1996 to be near family again.
Don was a lifelong devout Catholic, and his family was always his priority. When he wasn’t spending time with his “Margy”, he could be found golfing or fishing with his children and grandchildren. He was also an accomplished woodcarver, creating many special carvings for his family, including a coveted trophy for the annual “Jeakle Open” family golf outing. In recent years as the most senior player, he was also more than happy to serve as arbiter over the rules of play.
He is survived by his brother, Paul Jeakle; children Patrice (James) Bonner and Jim (Rebecca) Jeakle; eight grandchildren, Elizabeth (Chris) Czapski, Madeline (Pete) Nemes, Anna (Ben) Donohue, Will Jeakle, Molly (Austin) Holsinger, NoahJeakle, Andrew Bonner, and Olivia Jeakle; and two great grandchildren, Luca and Eleanor Czapski; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his Wife Margaret; his parents, Louise and William; and brothers, William and Edwin.
Memorials in his name can be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or the Sarah M Foster Infusion Center at Munson Healthcare Charlevoix Hospital.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday, June 1st at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Charlevoix.
Arrangements are in the care of the Charlevoix Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com.Saturday, June 1, 2024
