Darleen Dhaseleer

Darleen June (Dimick) Dhaseleer passed away peacefully on January 10th at age 93, of natural causes.  Clyde and Stella Dimick, Darleen's parents lived in Charlevoix on a farm off Barnard Road.   Just across the road was the farm of John and Josephine Dhaseleer where she met their son and the love of her life Charles Dhaseleer. They were just kids at the time but Charles fancied her and kept track of her after the Dimick family moved to Levering, MI. Darleen took a job as a nurses aid in Petoskey and she started dating Charles.

Darleen graduated from Mercy Central Nursing School in Grand Rapids.  She and Charles married on June 19, 1948 and they purchased the Dhaseleer Family farm from John and Josephine who moved into town to enjoy retirement.  After working as a nurse for a short time, Darleen opted to become a full time mother and she and Charles raised 12 children on the farm.  After 20 years of motherhood, Darleen took a nurses refresher course at NCMC, learned to drive and went back to work as a Registered Nurse.  Over the years she worked at Little Traverse Hospital (now McClaren) Lockwood McDonald and Charlevoix Hospital.  After 18 years she retired from nursing, she and Charles sold their farm to their son Carl and moved to town where they enjoyed retirement.

Darleen and Charles were devoted members of St. Mary's Catholic Church and  Barnard Grange.  Darleen loved the activities at the grange, especially square dancing, card parties and potlucks.  She also took up quilting and made beautiful quilts for her children, grandchildren and church raffles.  She quilted many years for charities and  had wonderful cherished friends from quilting and the Grange.  Darleen had a knack for growing flowers and was a member of the altar society for many years. Over the years the family grew to add 26 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren with more on the way.  Darleen's beloved Charles passed away Dec 6th, 2019 after 71 years of marriage and she moved in with her daughter Beth (Kirk) Weaver where they and siblings Mary and Sue cared for her until her passing. She loved to sing old songs adding her own special twists to the standard verses and loved to play cards.  Darleen is cherished by her family for her laugh, love, care and example of a well lived life, she will forever live on in our hearts.

Darleen is survived by all of her children: John (Connie) Dhaseleer , Susan (David) Babcock, Mary (Carl) Romanik, Allan (Leslie) Dhaseleer, Elaine (John) Scharenbroch, Esther Moore, Beth (Kirk) Weaver. Les (Linda)Dhaseleer, David (Heather) Dhaseleer, Carol (Norbert) Scharenbroch, Carl (Cornelia) Dhaseleer, Laura Dhaseleer and all of her grand and great grand children.  Also survived by her half brother Chuck (Ruth) Hiar and her sister in law Sally Hiar.
