Calvin Shooks

Calvin Douglas Shooks, 73 of Central Lake, passed away November 11, 2020 at home.  He was born January 29, 1947 in Charlevoix the son of Versal and Christine (VanStedum) Shooks.

Cal graduated from Central Lake High School in 1965 and attended Michigan State University before entering the United States Air Force.  He was proud to work on the then top secret F117 Stealth Fighter radar and electronic systems while in the service.  Cal proudly served his country for 20 years before retiring.

After the service he worked at Nu-Way Marine Electronics transferring his knowledge of aircraft radars to working on marine radars.  He then went to work at the Central Lake Public Schools from 1995 to 2013 as the technology coordinator.  When not working his day job, Cal could be found volunteering his time with the Central Lake Lions Club throughout the community.  He’d also be up in the tall box calling the score at the high school football games and driving the school bus.

In retirement, Cal liked to travel to see his friends and family.  He often drove local veterans to medical appointments, and he was the President of the Northern Michigan Classes of the Reformed Churches of America.

Cal was a longtime, proud member of the Belltower Reformed Church where he and his beautiful bride Denise Cary were married 43 years ago.

Surviving is his wife Denise, his sons Matthew (Stephanie) Shooks of Columbus, OH and Daniel Shooks of Ft. Worth, TX, grandchildren Luke, Jacob, and Abagail Shooks, brother Bryan (Barb) Shooks, sister Cindy (Randy) Ruis, brother in law Dean (Pam Matson) Cary and sister in law Sharon (Jerry) Tornga, nieces and nephews Scott (Julie) Papineau, Amanda (Jeff) Skeel, Beth (John) Tutor, Brad Ruis, Conor Cary, Kevin (Alison) Cary, Adam Cary, Nicole (Ron) Johnson, Andrea Earle, and several great nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents.
