Betty Zipp

Betty June Zipp, 99, of Charlevoix, passed away on Tuesday, August 28, 2024, at the American House in Charlevoix. She was born Betty June Pearl at the Cottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe, MI, on June 5th, 1925, the daughter of Harold and Pearl (Lakies) Pearl.

Betty lived in Charlevoix during her childhood and was a graduate of Charlevoix High School, class of 1943, and the leader of the drum majorettes in the band. She went on to work for Chrysler Motor Engineering as a secretary during World War II, handling parts for B-29’s and tanks. After the war, she was a telephone operator for Michigan Bell in Charlevoix until they closed. She then completed a cosmetology course and had a salon for 30 years.

On September 24, 1966, she married Lawrence Zipp. They did a great deal of travelling in the southerly states and wintered in Florida. Betty enjoyed a number of activities including dancing, tennis, golf, and played in shuffleboard tournaments in Florida. She was a member of the Petoskey Second Liners who frequently performed locally and nationally in parades and special events with her favorite group, the Epsilon Jazz Band. She was a lifetime member of the Charlevoix Historical Society. She was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, and a volunteer at the Bay Shore Food Pantry.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lawrence, and her son James.

She is survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Interment will be at Brookside Cemetery in Charlevoix.
