Bernadette (Smigelski) Peterson passed peacefully from this life on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, beginning her eternal rest.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Peterson; her parents, Phillip and Esther Smigelski; and her brother, Philip Smigelski.
She is survived by her sons, Philip Peterson Sr. and Michael (Amy) Glass; her grandchildren, Kathryn (Ethan) Linebarger, Philip Peterson Jr., Michaela (Shaun) LeJeune, Meadow Glass, and London Glass; and her great-granddaughter, Sylvia Rose LeJeune. She is also survived by her brothers, Jerome (Joyce) Smigelski and Frank (Lois) Smigelski, along with many nieces and nephews who held a special place in Aunt Bernie’s heart, as well as dear friends who shared in her life and laughter.
Bernie was raised in Alpena, on the east side of the state, and often remarked that while she was raised in the east, she would eventually settle in the west. She built a meaningful career as a Registered Nurse, serving at Northern Michigan Hospital and Northwest Community Health until her retirement.
She was a proud graduate of Alpena Catholic Central, North Central Michigan College, and the University of Michigan, where she graduated magna cum laude. Bernie was an active member of Community Reformed Church of Charlevoix, where she volunteered on numerous committees and served on the Hospice Board for several years. She also remained a proud alumna of the University of Michigan.
Bernadette and her husband, John, shared a love of travel and spent many years exploring new places and experiences together. She especially enjoyed fishing and treasured the time she spent with her family and friends.
