Anne-Marie Rock was born on January 20, 1947 to parents Sture Sjögårdhe and Margit Pettersson. Growing up in Sweden, spending summers in the Stockholm archipelago and on a beloved family farm, she developed a love for waterways and nature.
Anne-Marie ultimately moved to Michigan, where she met the love of her life Peter Rock. Settling on Grosse Ile, she helped raise her daughter Kim and son Karl. Always finding inspiration in her surroundings, she developed her love for painting and gardening. Cultivating seven different gardens at the homestead, she developed an encyclopedic knowledge and understanding of all plants.
She developed a similar love for painting throughout her lifetime drawing on her experiences traveling across the world. She created art in diverse mediums including oil, watercolor, pastel, and mixed-medium. Anne-Marie’s paintings have garnered awards at judged exhibits, and she was honored to be chosen to have one of her pieces exhibited for a time at the State Capitol in Lansing.
Moving to Northern Michigan had always been a goal of hers, and while that became a part-time reality in 2001, she fulfilled her dream in 2021 moving to Antrim County permanently. She discovered the beauty of Northern Michigan’s fields, orchards, forests, and lakes which reminded her of her homeland.
Anne-Marie Christina Rock passed away on August 31, 2025 peacefully at home after a battle with colon cancer. She leaves behind her husband Peter, daughter Kim, son Karl, sister May (Bjorn) Nikali, nieces Mia, Linnea, Kellie, and June, nephew Scott, Sister-in-law Klara Mericle, and golden-doodle Freddie.
In keeping with Anne-Marie’s wishes, there will not be a funeral or memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to “TAILS”, a non-profit on Grosse Ile dedicated to the shelter and care of domesticated, homeless, or injured local pets. Checks may be mailed to: TAILS 7796 Macomb St, Grosse Ile, MI 48138 with a comment of “in memory of Anne-Marie Rock”.
Arrangements are in the care of the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
