With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Andrew William “Andy” Maier, 62, on May 25, 2026, while visiting Utah. He was a beloved father, brother, son, and friend whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Born on January 17, 1964, in Bay City, Michigan, Andy grew up along the shores of Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair in a family of sailors and quickly developed a love for the water. He spent much of his life sailing and proudly participated in the Bayview Mackinac Race for many years. Whether on a sailboat, on his beloved jet-boat “Slapshot” on Gull Lake, or sharing stories of adventure on the water, he was happiest when connected to the places and traditions he loved.
Andy graduated from Ferris State University in 1986 with a Bachelor's Degree in Business and Advertising. He remained involved in the Ferris community by joining the Ferris Grand Rapids Council in 2018 and returning to the Big Rapids campus numerous times as a guest speaker. He never missed an opportunity to support and cheer on his alma mater. Andy had a deep passion for hockey that followed him throughout his life. He enjoyed playing, watching, and coaching the sport, and was a devoted fan of the Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche. More importantly, he loved the hockey community and took great pride in mentoring and encouraging players both on and off the ice.
A believer in giving back, Andy dedicated countless hours to the communities he surrounded himself with. He coached a special needs hockey team, volunteered at a variety of animal sanctuaries, was a proud member of the Fans of Valley Field, and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. His generosity, compassion, and willingness to help others left a lasting impact on many lives.
Andy was also an enthusiastic collector of a variety of different things - sports memorabilia, Coca-Cola bottles, Hot Wheels cars, anything related to Batman, and countless other treasures. Those who knew him knew that almost anything could be a part of a collection, and the things he collected brought him great joy and sparked conversations.
Andy is survived by his son, Mitchell (Stephanie) Maier; his daughter, Rene Maier; his brother, Jim (Sue Girbach) Maier; and many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Maier and Judith Maier, and his brother Jeffrey Maier.
The family is currently making arrangements and plans to hold a memorial service at a later date. Additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
Arrangements are in the care of the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Please sign his online guestbook www.mortensenfuneralhomes.com.
