Robert D. Calu, 83, of Kewadin, passed away on December 24, 2018 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on February 25, 1935, in Detroit, the son of George and Jeanne (DePauw) Calu.
Bob enjoyed a long and successful career with the Chrysler Corporation (FCA) finally retiring in 1994 after 42 years of dedication. He also served in the U.S. Navy during both the Korean and Vietnam wars.
His passions were golfing, automobiles, sailing, and maintaining his yard with his John Deere tractor. He also enjoyed spending winters in Key West, FL in his motorhome. Most importantly Bob enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
On October 23, 1981, in Charlevoix, he married Suzi Knight Kassel who survives. Also surviving are a son James (Mary Ann) Kassel, a granddaughter Kayla Kassel, grandson Robert James Kassel all of Elk Rapids and a brother-in-law William Hjorth of Chicago, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as 6 siblings, Evelyn Jean, Georginia Marie, George Arthur, Marion Rose, Jeanne Alexander and baby James Calu.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 3, 2019, from 5-7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Elk Rapids, with a Vigil for the Deceased at 7 p.m.
Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019 with Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski presiding.
